What can AI actually do for a small business?
AI handles work that's repetitive, time-sensitive, or heavy on reading and writing. In a small business that means answering calls and messages fast, following up on leads and quotes, pulling details out of documents, screening listings or applications, and drafting replies a person checks. It's weak at judgment calls, relationships, and deciding what your business should do.
What does that look like in a real business?
At my gym, an inquiry gets the offer and a booking right away, and reschedules, cancels and no-shows each run their own follow-up. When somebody walks in, a coach gets a heads-up and makes the offer face to face. More on the gym intake.
For a residential contractor, I turned a bound notebook of prices and formulas into a pricing app the team uses in the field. The app gives the number. What to recommend is still up to the person in the house. More on the pricing app.
In my land business, a rules layer and a set of AI steps screen listings before I ever open one, and I underwrite the short list by hand. More on the land screen.
What should stay human?
Anything where trust, judgment or a relationship decides the outcome. In all three of those builds, the coach makes the offer, the person in the house makes the recommendation, and I do the underwriting. AI takes the routine work so people have more time for those calls.
Is AI better than regular automation?
Not always. A lot of what owners want is plain automation, where this happens and then that happens. It's cheaper, more predictable and easier to fix.
I reach for AI when the work involves reading, writing, or choosing between messy options. Sometimes a simple workflow beats an agent, and I'll tell you when.
How much does it cost to set up AI in a small business?
It depends on what's being built and how many of your systems it has to touch. Some projects are fixed-fee and others are ongoing. After a discovery call I'll tell you what I'd build first and what it would take, and if the math doesn't work for your business, I'll say so.
Where do I start?
Start with the problem. I wrote more about that in where a small business owner should start with AI, and the kinds of things I build are on the AI & Automation Tools page.
Talk it through with me.
Bring the problem, even if it's still fuzzy. We'll talk about what's going on, what might be behind it, and whether I'm the right person to help. If I'm not, I'll tell you.
