What does a growth consultant actually do for a small business?
A growth consultant finds what's keeping your business from growing and helps fix it. That can be who you sell to, what you charge, where leads come from, how you sell, or the systems behind all of it. At Pattern RevOps that's me, Steve Kiernan, working with you directly from the first call through the finished work.
What is Pattern RevOps?
Pattern RevOps is a one-person growth and go-to-market firm in Williamsville, New York, just outside Buffalo. I started it in 2021. It isn't connected to Pattern, the e-commerce company.
I work with owner-run businesses in Western New York and across the US, mostly in home services, gyms and studios, real estate and software. More about the Western New York side.
What does the work look like?
I go in with a thesis and then follow the data. First I learn how the business works and what's changed. Then I look for the constraint, the thing holding everything else back. We decide what changes and how we'll measure it, then we build it, launch it and learn from what happens.
Sometimes the output is a plan, because knowing where the landmines are is worth a lot. Sometimes it's a sales process, a CRM cleanup, or a tool I build. Here's how I work.
What happens on the first call?
It's a free discovery call, about 30 minutes. You tell me what's going on and I ask a lot of questions. By the end we'll both know whether I can help. If I can, I'll propose one or more ways to go after it and walk you through the proposal step by step. If I'm not the right person, I'll tell you.
How much does a growth consultant cost?
It depends on the work. Some projects are fixed-fee and others are ongoing. The scope and the price go in a written proposal after the first call, with every step spelled out.
Who is a good fit?
Owners who want to grow and are open to learning what the data says. If you believe your product sells itself, think marketing won't work for your business, or already know you won't change anything, I'm not your guy.
Who is Steve Kiernan?
I've helped start, buy, or run more than a dozen companies over almost 30 years, in software, the trades, real estate, gyms and more. I ran Pointman, which built field software for residential trades businesses. We grew it to more than 1,500 customers across the US and Canada, and ServiceTitan acquired it in 2020. More about me.

Talk it through with me.
Bring the problem, even if it's still fuzzy. We'll talk about what's going on, what might be behind it, and whether I'm the right person to help. If I'm not, I'll tell you.
